Generations of computer science from 1951 when first mechanical computer was built in Pennsylvania University of USA

Generations of computer

1. First generation of computer (1951-58): First electronic computer was built in Pennsylvania University USA 1946. First generation of computer is characterized by huge size, heavy weight and high cost. The electronic valves used as main components produce a lot of heat and consume a lot of power.
2. Second Generation (1959-64): the second generation of computer which appeared in 1659 at Silicon Transistors instead of electronic valves characterizes by less size and weight, reduction in cost, portable, heat dissipation was negligible.
3. Third generation (1965-70): characteristics- Replacement of number of transistors by I C’s (integrated circuits) there was a further reduction in size and weight. There was a considerable improvement and durability. There was a further cost reduction.
4. Fourth Generation (1971-85): till the fourth generation computer was built a number of silicon chips were used in discrete circuits. Henceforth a single micro processor chip was used to accommodate the entire function of circuits. Characteristics:
a. Further reduction in size and weight
b. Easy portable
c. A considerable reduction in cost made those computers more affordable.
d. Extremely reliable, efficient and accurate
e. High level language could be used to produce excellent results.
5. Fifth Generation (1985 onwards): computers belonging to the current generation are mainly characterized by artificial intelligence
